Case is Closed: Breast is Best
Peggy O’Mara sets the record straight

Santa Fe, NM- Peggy O’Mara, the publisher, editor and owner of Mothering magazine ( www.mothering.com) for 33 years and the most respected voice in natural parenting, has written an editorial piece that directly responds to Hanna Rosin’s article in the Atlanta Monthly, “The Case Against Breatsfeeding” http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200904/case-against-breastfeeding .

O’Mara’s editorial, “Case is Closed: Breast is Best”, is dauntingly authoritative, with a truly impressive marshalling of facts as well. It also puts the issue in the larger context of human rights and economics.

Excerpt:
Hanna Rosin’s article exposes the dichotomy between the high value we place on breastfeeding and the low value we place on mothering, but it is cowardly to blame breastfeeding. Slandering breastfeeding because our society makes it inconvenient is like vacillating on equal pay for women because it’s difficult to achieve.
